Man remanded over Penang cop’s death during m-cycle pursuit

GEORGE TOWN – A 35-year-old man has been remanded till April 24 to facilitate investigations into an incident that saw a police constable killed yesterday morning.

The suspect, who has numerous criminal and drug records, is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and Section 186 of the same code for obstructing a civil servant from carrying out their official duties, said Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong.

In the incident about 1am, constable Muhammad Iqbal Mazlan, 22, and two other cops were pursuing the suspect, who ignored instructions to stop after he was found riding a motorcycle in a reckless manner in Jalan Scotland.

Initial investigations showed that Iqbal fell off his motorcycle after it was sideswiped by the suspect’s machine in Jalan Utama.

The policeman, who hit the pavement, died at the scene.

Iqbal, who was attached to the Dato Keramat station, was on a crime-prevention patrol when the incident occurred.

The suspect tested positive for methamphetamine, amphetamine and marijuana. – The Vibes, April 18, 2021
