PUTRAJAYA – The price of chicken has been fixed at RM7.90 a kg, following the 2021 Festive Season Maximum Price Control Scheme implementation throughout the country from yesterday.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Hasnol Zam Zam Ahmad said a total of 2,100 retailer, farmers’ market, sundry shop, wholesaler and hypermarket premises were inspected yesterday.

Of the total, only two complaints were received regarding poultry being sold above the maximum price, he added.

“The ministry understands that today (yesterday) is the first day of the scheme’s implementation, so there has to be some adjustments at the wholesaler and retailer levels.

“We will provide enough time for all quarters to abide by the scheme.”

On complaints by sellers that the fixed retail price of RM7.90 for standard chicken is killing their business, Hasnol Zam Zam said the scheme will not cause such a problem as margins have been set at all levels of the supply chain.

“For example, the price at the farm level is RM5.80. At the wholesale level, a price has been set according to areas. So, if we follow these stipulated margins, there should not be any problem.

“Maybe the supply was sent to retailers based on the price before the scheme was enforced.

“Today, during a check at the Precinct 8 market, we found that chicken sellers are selling poultry at RM7.90 per kg as stipulated.”

He also advised all quarters to adhere to the scheme for the common good.

“It can ensure the supply of chicken and controlled items is at a sufficient level, and, at the same time, allows consumers and sellers to enjoy a reasonable price.”

The first phase of the scheme involves 12 items in four categories – namely chicken, chicken egg, meat and sea produce – with the vegetable and dried food categories to be announced soon. – Bernama, April 22, 2021
