KUALA LUMPUR – Putrajaya MP Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s appeal against his graft conviction starts today at the Court of Appeal.
Clad in a batik shirt, Tengku Adnan arrived at the courthouse before 9am for his three-day hearing. Apart from today, the court has fixed tomorrow and April 26 to hear the appeal.
He is appealing against his conviction and sentence for accepting a bribe of RM2 million from a businessman.
On December 21, the Kuala Lumpur High Court handed Tengku Adnan a 12-month jail term and a RM2 million fine. However, the court allowed his application for a stay of execution for his jail term and fine, pending appeal.
Tengku Adnan was charged in his capacity as a public servant, namely Federal Territories minister, with having received for himself RM2 million from businessman Tan Sri Chai Kin Kong, who is Aset Kayamas Sdn Bhd (AKSB) director.
A Hong Leong Islamic Bank cheque belonging to the company was deposited into a CIMB account owned by Tadmansori Holdings Sdn Bhd (THSB), which Tengku Adnan has an interest in and is known to AKSB as being related to his official duties.
Tengku Adnan was accused of committing the offence at CIMB Bank Bhd’s Pusat Bandar Damansara branch on June 14, 2016.
The charge was framed under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which provides an imprisonment of up to two years or a fine or both, if convicted. – The Vibes, April 22, 2021
