KUALA LUMPUR – Three schools in two districts in Kedah have been ordered to remain closed for another seven days due to Covid-19 cases among students, said Kedah health director Dr Mohd Fikri Ujang.

He said the affected schools are Maktab Mahmud Baling, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Baling and SMK Agama Kedah Mergong in Kota Setar.

Sinar Harian reported that each school is involved in Covid-19 clusters in the state, with Maktab Mahmud Baling involved in the Jalan Weng cluster; SMK Baling, the Anggerik Cempaka cluster; and, SMKA Kedah Mergong, the Dinamik cluster.

“The infected students are being treated in two locations.

“Those in Category 2 and 3 are being treated at a low-risk quarantine and treatment centre, while the rest are receiving care at their respective hostels.

“State health authorities are conducting contact tracing among the teachers and students.

“For now, banners are put up in red zones to serve as reminders for the public to adhere to standard operating procedures,” he was quoted as saying.

Yesterday, the state Health Department reported another 16 individuals tested positive in the Dinamik cluster and one in the Anggerik Cempaka cluster.

Maktab Mahmud Baling has been closed since April 18 when 35 students contracted Covid-19.

SMKA Kedah Mergong had initially recorded 15 infected students, while SMK Baling had five. The two schools have been ordered shut until April 28 for sanitisation. – The Vibes, April 26, 2021
