PUTRAJAYA – The Health Ministry will re-evaluate the case of a burger seller in Kelantan who was issued a RM50,000 compound on Sunday for violating the movement control order (MCO) by operating beyond 10pm.
An assessment will be made on whether to grant him a fine reduction or exemption.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba, in a statement today, said the ministry is concerned about Wan Mohd Faisal Wan Kadir’s plight and views the case seriously.
He urged Wan Faisal to appeal against the compound as soon as possible.
“The ministry views this as a special case. It needs to be addressed immediately.”
The purpose of issuing compounds for MCO violations is not solely to punish, but to educate the public as well, said Dr Adham.
“Those issued compounds are always given an opportunity to defend themselves. They are allowed to file an appeal according to the stipulated mechanism.
“The ministry will re-evaluate the case, and see whether a reduction or exemption can be given, if there are reasonable grounds.”
Meanwhile in Kota Baru, Kelantan police chief Datuk Shafien Mamat said they would call all owners of business premises who were issued compounds, including the burger seller who was fined RM50,000 that went viral on social media yesterday.
Shafien said the reason for calling them would be to offer them a compound rate in accordance with the guidelines (of compound and discount rate) set for the offence under Act 342. – Bernama, April 27, 2021
