GEORGE TOWN – Although Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador is the outgoing top cop, his accusations of political “frogs” yesterday must be taken seriously without fear or favour, said Umno youth chief.
Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said before the situation devolved like “nasi menjadi bubur”, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has to initiate investigations into Hamid’s “revelations”.
“MACC must act without fear or favour to save this country from the stigma of corruption and public perception that the political system is inundated with bribery. We also need to clear the misperception the international community may have of us.”
He added that Hamid’s accusations reaffirmed long-held suspicions by the public that the political leadership uses graft as means to stay in power while ordinary citizens are struggling to make ends meet.
“It is late on the part of Hamid though because the corruption nature began creeping even under Pakatan Harapan (PH) where many leaders were threatened with court cases, punitive action from income tax collectors and rewards just to join the Bersatu.
“They wanted to strengthen the then ruling coalition of PH through Bersatu.
“It then progressed under Perikatan Nasional (PN) to realise the agenda of the ‘(grand) scheme of things’, with claims that many leaders were offered positions in political parties, the cabinet, and government-linked companies,” he said in a statement.
In his final press conference at Bukit Aman yesterday, Hamid accused these “frogs” of making graft commonplace, and said MACC should not allow defections to go unchecked.
