KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia is currently facing a “toxic political emergency” driven by power and money that risks hurting the country on all counts, said former minister Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz.
Rafidah, popularly known as the “Iron Lady” for her blunt manner of speaking, warned that the damages caused today could be felt for generations to come if nothing is done to correct them.
She stopped short of mentioning names in a lengthy Facebook post today, or whom she was addressing her statement to.
Her comments come amid claims of positions and money being offered to certain individuals to support the government of the day.
“There have been many articles, speeches and publications in various media on issues that are extremely worrying. Unfortunately, none are to be proud of.
“These are things that are embarrassing to Malaysia, and have worsened our image, involving corruption and various misappropriations within the administration.
“The outside world can clearly see what is happening and it is perplexed as to why our authorities are not acting. They certainly know what’s happening, but choose not to see, hear, or talk (about them).
“The negative impact arising from the country’s increasing debt, corruption, and power abuse will affect the country for years. We are supposed to be responsible for leaving behind a Malaysia that our children can be proud of.”
Rafidah said at present, what Malaysia needs is not people who want to be in charge and assume positions, but those who are truly capable of taking charge and can implement policies responsibly and wisely.
“Many want to be in charge, but do not have the capacity or competence to take charge.”
She said many Malaysians will suffer due to the impulsive behaviour of certain leaders who would do anything to remain in power.
She added that no one should feel indebted to any political party or individual just because they have been given “gifts” in various forms, at the expense of the country’s future.
“It doesn’t matter if you entered through the back door or the front door, are you willing to risk our children’s future, ignore our country’s standing completely, just because of position, pay and bonuses?
“Those gifts are short-lived, and will only benefit certain individuals.”
In concluding her post, Rafidah said: “Let us all pray together, may the Almighty continue to protect and safe us.” – The Vibes, May 1, 2021
