GEORGE TOWN – What was supposed to be a night filled with merrymaking and entertainment turned tragic when a factory executive apparently fell to his death from the 14th floor of a condominium in Tg Tokong.
The 26-year-old victim was found dead at a swimming pond, which was situated at level five of the high-rise after he allegedly fell in pre-dawn hours here.
Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong, who confirmed the incident, said that the victim suffered from severe injuries and died at the scene.
His body has been sent to Penang Hospital for a post-mortem.
Soffian said that the victim was part of a gathering of eight friends, who had leased the unit for a party.
Meanwhile, 45 youngsters were fined elsewhere for partying without adhering to the standard operating procedures (SOP).
Penang, which remains a Covid-19 red zone, is under the conditional movement control order where eateries and food joints are expected to close by 10pm, except for some Muslim outlets during Ramadan.
In another incident later between 1am and 3am, police swooped in on four entertainment outlets here and in Bukit Mertajam, where they compounded 45 patrons RM5,000 each for allegedly defying SOPs while the operators were fined up to RM25,000 for operating beyond the stipulated hours.
“We’ve issued RM325,000 worth of compounds,” said Soffian.
The offences were for operating without approval and beyond the stipulated hours while not observing SOPs such as physical distancing.
In Bukit Mertajam, an entertainment outlet in Icon City was also raided, and its caretaker as well as 19 patrons were compounded for not observing SOPs. – The Vibes, May 2, 2021
