KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani has officially taken over the duties of inspector-general of police from Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador, with the handover held at Bukit Aman this morning.

This ceremony was witnessed by Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Mohamed Said. Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, who had been scheduled to attend, did not turn up.

Acryl Sani, 59, is handed the reins as Hamid’s contract ends today.

Acryl Sani’s tenure as the country’s 13th IGP is until October 3. He was appointed deputy IGP on August 14 last year.

A Home Ministry statement said Acryl Sani was born on October 3, 1961 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. He holds a Master of Science (Management) from Universiti Utara Malaysia, and a bachelor’s degree (honours) in civil engineering. He joined the force on February 2, 1986 as an assistant superintendent cadet.

During his career in the force, Acryl Sani has helmed Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department, Strategic Resources and Technology Department, and Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department.

In a short speech, Hamid urged police to carry out their duties with integrity.

He said he is confident Acryl Sani is able to lead the force and achieve excellence as the new IGP.

This is in contrast with the strong statements he made last Friday in a press conference hours after his replacement was announced by Hamzah.

Hamid spared little when hitting out at the minister, criticising political interference in police appointments and the reshuffling of top brass, and the corrupt practices that follow political “frogs”, among others.

“There’s no harmony between me and the minister because we have different ways of thinking.”

He said Hamzah’s interference is “not good for the country”, makes it difficult for the IGP to organise police matters, and gives rise to factions within the force.

He also recommended that politicians refrain from chairing the Police Force Commission, as they bring in elements of politics. – The Vibes, May 3, 2021
