KUALA LUMPUR – Convent Bukit Nanas’ school board is mulling a settlement over its legal action to challenge the non-renewal of its land lease, reported the New Straits Times.
Counsel Damien Chan, representing The Lady Superior of the Society of Saint Maur, told the paper the parties are considering a settlement following the announcement by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on the decision to extend the school’s lease for another 60 years.
“We are waiting for an official letter (from the government),” he was quoted as saying.
The matter came up for case management before high court senior deputy registrar Nur Aslamiah Jamil.
Chan told NST that the court has fixed June 3 for parties to give updates on the status of the settlement.
On April 19, high court judge Datuk Noorin Badarin granted CBN’s review application for leave and permission to file a judicial review. The stay of proceedings was scheduled for tomorrow but has been converted into case management instead.
In the application filed on April 7, the school named the Federal Territories Land and Mines Office director as respondent.
On April 22, the PMO in a statement said the school was granted a 60-year extension on its lease, ahead of its expiry on September 6.
The PMO added that the extension was given for the purpose of education.
The all-girls school was established in 1899. In 1961, the Ruler in Council granted CBN a state lease.
In 2017, the school applied to renew the lease, but received a letter dated December 18, 2020 only in January this year. – The Vibes, May 3, 2021
