APART from Serian, Kuching and Sri Aman are now in the very unhealthy air category, as the Air Pollutant Index (API) reached the very unhealthy level based on checks at around 6 am this morning.

According to the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) portal, the Kuching station recorded a reading of 245 while the Sri Aman station recorded 214.

Serian API, which recorded the highest reading of over 500 last Friday, continued to record good readings, with an API of 189, to be in the unhealthy category.

In the same category are Samalaju stations (200); Bintulu (199), Samarahan (107), Mukah (194), Sarikei (189), ILP Miri (183), Sibu (181) and Miri (177).

Intermittent rain in several areas in West Kalimantan, including Pontianak, and Sarawak is believed to have contributed to the decrease in transboundary haze levels.

The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee, in its statement yesterday, said it had closely monitored air quality, weather conditions, hotspots, and the movement of transboundary haze for three days before advising Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on the status of the haze in Serian.

Currently, all business and employment activities in the area are still allowed.

Meanwhile, a total of 54 primary schools and nine secondary schools under the supervision of the Bintulu and Tatau/Sebauh District Education Offices (PPD) in Sarawak have been closed until Sept 11 due to the haze.

The Sarawak State Education Department (JPNS), in a statement last night, said the decision was made based on continuous monitoring and the API reading reaching very unhealthy levels at 8 pm.

"The temporary closure of 54 primary schools involves 22,476 students and nine secondary schools with 17,268 students under the supervision of PPD Bintulu and Tatau/Sebauh from 7 to 11 Sept 2026," the statement said. – September 6, 2026
