KUALA LUMPUR – The domestic trade minister’s job is not just to make announcements, but also take proactive steps to address the prices of goods, said Muda.
In a statement today, Muda secretary Amshar Aziz was responding to Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who said there have been no complaints on the soaring prices of goods.
Amshar said the ministry must take a more proactive approach in handling the issue.
Pointing to the 2021 Maximum Price Scheme for Festive Seasons that was implemented after the general public complained about the rising price of raw goods, Amshar said the minister’s duty is more than just making announcements on the prices of goods.
“Muda recommends that the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry cooperate with the Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry to ensure the prices of goods remain at a level that do not burden the public, and not only during the weeks following the maximum price scheme.”
Muda also recommended a review of the structure of the National Farmers Organisation (Nafas), which is supposed to be a source of food security in the country.
Amshar urged that Nafas receives proper funds allocation and management to avoid it becoming like the National Feedlot Corporation.
“The government must study ways to ensure middlemen do not take exorbitant profits or ensure direct sales from traders to customers.
“Online shopping platforms have already become a place that cuts out the need for a middleman. The government must be more aggressive in using the tools already in existence.” – The Vibes, May 6, 2021
