KUALA LUMPUR – The nation logged close to 4,500 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, an almost 1,000-case rise from yesterday at 3,551.

Of the 4,498 new cases today, almost one-third of the total was recorded in Selangor with 1,424 infections. 

The last time daily cases breached 4,500 was on February 4, when 4,571 infections were clocked.

Today’s cases take the cumulative total since the start of the pandemic to 432,425 infections.

The Health Ministry said a staggering 22 deaths were also recorded today. 

The highest number of fatalities in a day was on February 18, when 25 patients succumbed to the virus.

The spike today comes just two days into the movement control order (MCO) in six districts in Selangor, and during the first day of the MCO here. 

After Selangor, most of the infections were recorded in Sarawak with 750 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (436), Johor (327), Penang (313), Kelantan (297), Kedah (209), Negri Sembilan (188), Sabah (153) and Perak (148).

States that saw fewer than 100 cases are Terengganu (87), Pahang (78), Melaka (74), Putrajaya (8), Perlis (4) and Labuan (2).

As for clusters, the Health Ministry said 425 currently had active cases, including 19 new ones today.

Ten clusters involved worksites in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan, Sarawak, Johor, Sabah, Perak and Melaka while four community clusters were registered in Selangor, Sarawak, Kelantan and Kedah.
