MELAKA – Rock singer Datuk Ahmad Azhar Othman, better known as Awie, will be summoned to the Melaka Tengah police district headquarters to facilitate a probe into the alleged violation of Covid-19 standard operating procedures during a performance at a hotel in Jalan Hang Tuah here.

State Criminal Investigation Department chief Mohd Sukri Kaman, in a statement today, said police will also call up several other individuals, including the programme’s organiser, to assist in the investigation under Section 21A of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 and Regulation 18 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Recovery Movement Control) (No. 3) 2021.

“Melaka police received a report at 12.43am today on a 42-second video clip that has gone viral on social media showing Datuk Awie and several others violating recovery movement control order SOPs during an event at a hotel.

“All involved in the case will be called up to the Melaka Tengah police headquarters to get their statements recorded. The investigation will be completed as soon as possible, before the case is referred to the state prosecutor.”

He urged people with information on the matter to come forward and assist in the probe.

The video shows Awie performing at an event without adhering to the SOPs, including not wearing a mask and not observing physical distancing.

The show is believed to be part of the Satu Kayuhan, Satu Zikir humanitarian programme for rickshaw drivers on Friday. – Bernama, May 9, 2021
