KUALA LUMPUR – Police are investigating allegations of alcohol smuggling in Forest City, Iskandar Puteri.
In a statement yesterday, Iskandar Puteri district police chief Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the allegations originated from a video titled ‘Adakah ini kerja sindiket arak di Johor?’ (Is this the work of an alcohol syndicate in Johor?).
The 2 minute and 21 second video uploaded on Malaysian Crime Watch – MyWatch Facebook page showed several men loading crates of beer into a car located at Forest City.
“The Facebook account holder alleged the incident happened at the duty-free zone. Thus the Iskandar Puteri police department has taken note of the matter and will conduct investigations into the allegations,” Dzulkhairi said in a statement.
According to MyWatch chairman Datuk R. Sri Sanjeevan, customers are only allowed to purchase a maximum of one crate of beer at duty-free zones.
Hence, it is possible that said individuals may be selling the beers outside the zone at a higher price.
“Normally at duty-free shops, people are allowed to buy a few cans of beer or a maximum of one crate.
“But here they are taking out so many crates.
“It is possible that if it is indeed smuggling, they buy them for cheap and sell at a higher price outside,” Sanjeevan told The Vibes. – The Vibes, May 16, 2021
