A LAWYER who was previously given a good behaviour bond with a surety of RM3,000 for two years for drunk driving was today jailed for 14 days and fined RM12,000 by the High Court.

Judge Aslam Zainuddin handed down the sentence to Chia Wilson, 38, after reviewing the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate's Court decision on April 15, reported BuletinTV3.

Chia, who was detained in Ops Mabuk, was also ordered to serve a 12-month jail sentence if he fails to pay the fine, in addition to having his driving licence revoked for two years.

The court also ordered the accused to serve the jail sentence immediately starting today, while lawyer Ng Chia How was directed to file a formal application to suspend the implementation of the jail sentence pending an appeal at the Court of Appeal.

Previously, Chia pleaded guilty to driving a Mercedes with an alcohol content of 71 milligrams in 100 millilitres of blood, which is above the prescribed limit of 50 milligrams, on Jalan Awan Besar from Bukit Jalil heading towards Puchong at 12.40 am, February 27.

The charge was brought under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which provides for a maximum prison sentence of two years, a minimum fine of RM10,000 and a maximum of RM30,000, and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least two years from the date of conviction. – April 23, 2026
