GEORGE TOWN – The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) urged the Penang government to take stern legal action against those responsible for dumping garbage in Pulau Jerejak.
Its president, Mohideen Abdul Kadeer, said the results of the investigation into a garbage dumping incident in Pulau Jerejak should be disclosed and legal action should be taken against the parties involved.
He said the problem was serious and would have a lasting adverse impact on the environment, marine life, and the lives of local fishermen.
“The long-standing problem was uncovered earlier this month but until now the source and legal action taken by the relevant parties against those involved have not been made public.
“The situation triggered by the irresponsible parties should not be underestimated and strict legal action and appropriate punishment should be imposed on those involved,” he said in a statement here today.
Mohideen added that CAP wants cleaning work to be done not only on land but also on the seabed around the caged fish farming project area here.
He said that a CAP survey in Pantai Jerejak found that fishermen here were upset and worried about the incident as it could threaten marine life and their livelihoods even more seriously if left unattended. – Bernama, May 18, 2021
