KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia broke the record for the single highest number of Covid-19 cases logged daily with 6,976 infections, bringing the total to 512,091, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today.

In a statement, Dr Noor Hisham said the country also logged 49 deaths, which pushes the death toll to 2,248.

The recoveries recorded today were at 3,587, bringing the total discharged to 452,821.

He said of the 57,022 active cases, 681 were under intensive care, while 361 required breathing assistance.

Of today’s new cases, five were imported – one involving a local and the rest, foreigners.

Selangor again topped the list of states with the most number of cases at 2,235, followed by Sarawak (663), Kelantan (626), Johor (549), Kuala Lumpur (447), Negri Sembilan (434), Kedah (422) and Penang (372). 

This was followed by Perak, which logged 279 cases, Terengganu (266), Pahang (263), Melaka (209), Sabah (136), Labuan (37), Putrajaya (30) and Perlis (8).  

On today’s Covid-19 deaths, Dr Noor Hisham said 14 were recorded in Selangor, followed by Johor (8), Penang (6), Melaka (6), Kedah (4), and Sarawak (3), while Sabah, Negri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur logged two deaths each.

He said Perlis and Kelantan each recorded one fatality.

Dr Noor Hisham said that so far, the country has recorded a total of 2,025 clusters, including today’s 24 new clusters.

He said there are 1,469 clusters that have ended, while 556 remain active. – The Vibes, May 23, 2021
