LANGKAWI – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called on the government to adopt a non-partisan approach in addressing the Covid-19 pandemic.
Going on social media to air his views, Dr Mahathir, who is the Langkawi MP, said that the time has come for everyone in the country to band together to fight the virus as the daily death toll of 60 is no joke.
“Although we as the opposition have been rejected by the government with no room for negotiation, when the government needs help, we will reciprocate. We have helped supply tents and computers. This is not a virus affecting the government, we in the opposition are also exposed.”
Meanwhile, in reaching out to his constituents, he expressed dismay at cases on the island resort exceeding 100 as of now, saying it will go up if no precautions are initiated.
He said the main weapon to fight the virus is to get as many people vaccinated.
“When one is lining up for the vaccine, do not crowd and stand too close to each other. Stay at best 2m apart. It is more effective and orderly when undergoing the inoculation.”
He also reminded the islanders that they have no choice but to keep the district free from Covid-19, as it can ruin tourism and cause hardship.
“I did my vaccination early as I wanted to show the people that there are no side effects. Look at me and (Tun Dr) Siti Hasmah (Mohd Ali). Although we are over the age of 90, we took it.
“There were no side effects. I didn’t feel a thing. Maybe for the second time, some may feel feverish or suffer from muscular pain but to say that the jabs caused deaths is untrue. Do not believe in fairy tales.”
He also urged health authorities to allow vaccinations to be done until late evenings as it can help the country arrest the growing number of infections. – The Vibes, May 26, 2021
