KOTA BARU – A total of 1,078, or 18%, of the 5,921 active Covid-19 cases in Kelantan up till yesterday are children aged 12 years and under.
State Housing, Local Government and Health Committee chairman Dr Izani Husin said the majority of the cases involve kids in the district here (517), followed by Pasir Mas (132) and Tumpat (120).
“An analysis by the Kelantan Health Department found that 95% of these children were close contacts of previous Covid-19 patients,” he told Bernama today.
He said the high percentage of infections involving children is worrying.
“The public is reminded to comply with the standard operating procedures and not bring children to public areas. We also advise parents returning home to wash up before touching or interacting with their kids.”
On Tuesday, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said Covid-19 cases among children and babies have raised concern, as they are now the category with the highest risk of infection after the elderly.
Dr Izani, on his Facebook page, called on Kelantanese to comply with all SOPs, saying: “Wear a mask when you go out. When you come back home, wash your hands.”
He said the state recorded 754 new cases today, bringing its total to 24,723, with four fresh clusters logged as well.
“The infectivity rate in Kelantan has risen to 1.10, while the national rate is now 1.17. Covid-19 is in the community. Do not go to crowded areas. Continue complying with the SOPs for our own good.” – Bernama, May 27, 2021
