[UPDATED] Covid-19 cases hit 8,290, whopping 808 patients in ICU

KUALA LUMPUR – The country once again logged a record-high number of Covid-19 infections, breaching the 8,000-mark for the first time since the pandemic began.

The highest number of virus patients in intensive care was also recorded today, at 808. Of the total, 403 cases required breathing support. 

In a tweet, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 8,290 new daily cases were reported today, taking the cumulative tally of infections to 549,514.

This is the fourth consecutive day Malaysia saw a record number of daily infections, with 7,857, 7,478, and 7,289 caseload respectively on May 27, 26 and 25.

Sixty-one fatalities to the virus were also recorded in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 2,552.

There were also 4,814 recoveries to the coronavirus.

Selangor continues to lead with the highest number of cases today at 2,052, followed by Kelantan (851), Kuala Lumpur (830), Johor (762) and Sarawak (698).

Kedah saw 544 new infections, Negri Sembilan (520), Penang (421), Perak (405), Melaka (380), Sabah (308), Pahang (254) and Terengganu (207). 

Only Putrajaya, Perlis and Labuan saw fewer than 100 new cases with 44, eight and six, respectively.

Dr Noor Hisham in a statement said 61 new death were recorded today, taking the total fatality figure to 2,552. 

“18 of the cases are in Selangor; eight in Negeri Sembilan; seven in KL; five in Kedah; four each in Johor and Sarawak; three each in Melaka and Perak; two each in Penang, Kelantan, Labuan and Terengganu, and one in Sabah.” 

There are 21 new clusters today, bringing the total number of clusters since the start of the pandemic to 2,123.

Of the total today, six each are related to the workplace and community, four each involve education and religious activities, while one is related to a detention centre. – The Vibes, May 28, 2021
