KUALA LUMPUR - Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will finally have his statement recorded by the police over a list of 121 MPs supposedly backing him to form a new government.

The PKR president has been summoned for questioning at Bukit Aman tomorrow, according to Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Huzir Mohamed.

This comes after 113 police reports were lodged over the matter.

“The police is still conducting its investigation on the claims that have been going viral on social media.

“As such, Anwar has been asked to be present at the Classified Investigation Unit office in Bukit Aman On October 16 to provide his statement,” Huzir said in a statement today.

Anwar was initially scheduled to provide his statement on October 12, just one day before his audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, but his meeting with the police has since been postponed.

The case is being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code (for publishing or circulating statement or rumour with the intent to cause fear or alarm) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (for improper use of network facilities or network service).

Huzir urged the public to refrain from making or issuing any statements or speculations that could cause disharmony or division that could threaten public order.

Yesterday, an activist lawyer, Datuk Sankara Nair, had accused the police of deliberately harassing Anwar after he was summoned for questioning over the list of lawmakers purportedly supporting him as prime minister.

Speaking to The Vibes, he had said that the conduct of the police was tantamount to contempt of the parliamentary process and could be deemed as being detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

“There is no valid reason for the police to act in such a haste. It is a gross interference and an attempt to scupper and undermine the parliamentary process.

“They ought to know the law and not attempt to subvert it. It’s unfortunate they did not take note of these provisions under the Penal Code,” he said today. - The Vibes, October 15, 2020
