KOTA KINABALU – Those who dine in, including owners and workers of eateries, will be fined for violating standard operating procedures (SOPs) of the lockdown.

Sabah police commissioner Datuk Hazani Ghazali said food operators should instead prepare designated dining spots for themselves and their staff to eat.

“As long as you dine in, we will consider the matter as violating SOPs.

“They need to be isolated. If either the owner or staff (are found) eating openly, the authorities will consider them as dining in.

“This should be done in a designated area. A special place to eat should be created,” he said.

Hazani was responding to reports of several eateries being fined after owners and workers were caught dining in their own premises.

Warisan vice-president Datuk Junz Wong recently questioned the rationale of health authorities for compounding restaurant owners and workers for eating in their own premises.

Meanwhile, Hazani said compliance teams have been established by the police to ensure the people adhere to SOPs.

He said several teams have already been deployed, especially in the east coast of Sabah, where districts like Tawau and Lahad Datu have recorded the highest number of Covid-19 cases.

“We will not compromise and we will send compliance teams to districts like Lahad Datu, Kunak and Tawau, districts where the number of Covid-19 cases are spiking,” he said. – The Vibes, June 2, 2021
