GEORGE TOWN – All Penang remand prison staffers, who had been exposed to Covid-19 detainees, have tested negative in the second round of screening.
Prison director Mohamed Jusoh Ismail said the results were obtained yesterday and this is good news after more than 100 detainees tested positive for Covid-19 over the week.
He added that the staffers will undergo health screenings to ensure they are free of Covid-19.
“Time to time, we will conduct tests on staff members who have close contact with Covid-19 detainees.
“It will also be conducted on family members who live in the prison staff quarters.”
George Town district police said they will discuss with the Health Ministry on managing patients who are receiving methadone treatment in a building near the remand prison.
“The first day of EMCO (enhanced movement control order) conducted here went smoothly but we found there are many patients who need to come to Penang Hospital for treatment.
“This matter can be resolved and discussions will take place. I advise all road users to use alternative routes.”
Meanwhile, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow advised the public not to spread fake news that may cause panic.
