KOTA KINABALU – Sabah has recorded six new deaths from Covid-19 complications, bringing the total number of fatalities to the virus to 467, even as a new cluster – the Kopi Blues cluster – emerged yesterday.
The index case for the cluster in Tawau’s Sri Tg sub-district is a 46-year-old housewife.
The woman, who lives in Kg Lorong Saddani Mile Two, was found positive for the virus along with her child during a screening last Wednesday.
When officials proceeded to take 20 samples from her close contacts, they unearthed 10 more individuals infected, while six others are awaiting their results.
“The patients had attended a gathering at Kg Kopi Blues in Mile 2. There was a funeral ceremony and also prayers on May 29,” read a statement from the Sabah Disaster Management Committee for Covid-19 last night.
“Health authorities are still trying to detect more close contacts and the cause of the infection,” it said.
Statistics released by the committee showed two deaths occurring in Tawau, and one each in Semporna, Sandakan, Kuala Penyu and Beaufort.
“The Health Department reported that there were 309 new cases (yesterday), bringing the cumulative number of cases to 65,330 cases since last year,” it said.
Yesterday’s total marked 76 more new cases than Thursday, when the state recorded 223 infections.
A total of 143 of the cases yesterday are linked to close contacts and 91 are from existing clusters. Another 30 were from symptomatic screenings, while 26 more cases were from targeted screenings while 19 were due to other causes. – The Vibes, June 12, 2021
