MIRI – Four more deaths caused by Covid-19 were recorded in Sarawak today, along with three clusters and 569 new infections, as the vast state’s virus crisis rapidly worsens.
All fatalities involved senior citizens. Two women aged 71 and 84 succumbed to the virus at Kapit Hospital while a man aged 73 died at Sibu Hospital, as well as another man aged 66 at Meradong Hospital.
“The four confirmed Covid-19 deaths bring the coronavirus death tally to 346,” the state Disaster Management Committee secretariat said in a statement before extending condolences to the families of the deceased.
Sibu district continues to register a high rate of infections with 149 new cases today, followed by Kuching with 110, Kapit with 44, Miri with 41, Bintulu with 27, Subis with 26, and other districts with under 20 cases each.
On the three new outbreaks, the secretariat said the Kg Sebauh Hilir cluster in Lundu district saw the Gawai Miring gathering at a longhouse causing nine villagers to be infected with Covid-19.
The Melatai cluster in Kapit district saw 45 longhouse folks down with the coronavirus following a similar Gawai event.
Meanwhile, the Kg Tabuan Drahman cluster in Kuching saw 33 folks in a residential estate hit by Covid-19 during a neighbourhood get-together.
The secretariat said active screenings are being carried out by health units in these zones.
There are currently 82 clusters in Sarawak.
The secretariat said the state is extending its movement control order until June 28 due to the continued high rate of infections and deaths.
It once again appealed for public adherence to all standard operating procedures to help halt the infections and fatalities. – The Vibes, June 12, 2021
