LANGKAWI – Some 800,000 tourists are expected to visit the island here if domestic travel is allowed to resume in September, said the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada).
Chief executive Nasaruddin Abdul Mutalib said this is based on a tourism recovery plan by Lada.
He said the island resort has to achieve herd immunity by the third quarter of the year for the tourism sector to get back on track.
“We will work with the relevant authorities to make Langkawi a green zone.”
Langkawi saw some 296,000 local tourists in the first quarter of 2021 before the Covid-19 lockdown was reimposed, he said.
“Our target is to bring in 200,000 by the third and fourth quarters.”
Through its recovery plan, said Nasaruddin, Lada plans to help industry players revive their businesses.
As part of the agency’s corporate social responsibility, aid was distributed to taxi drivers at the Lada complex.
RM30,000 has also been allocated to assist 270 individuals who have lost their jobs in the tourism sector due to the pandemic, which has so far seen Langkawi record one death and 57 infections. – The Vibes, June 19, 2021
