[UPDATED] Fresh Covid-19 cases dip to 5,293, recoveries at 5,941, 60 fatalities

KUALA LUMPUR – The country’s daily Covid-19 count dipped slightly today to 5,293 from yesterday’s 5,911, bringing it to a total of 696,408 since the pandemic struck, said Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The health director-general said only seven infections over the last 24 hours were imported. There were also 5,941 recoveries today, which puts active cases at 63,815.

Selangor tops the table with 1,680 fresh cases, trailed by Negri Sembilan (693), Sarawak (661), Johor (627) and Kuala Lumpur (379).

Perak logged 205 cases, Melaka (183), Kedah (170), Kelantan (167), Sabah (163), Labuan (156), Penang (114), Pahang (77), Terengganu (12), Putrajaya (4) and Perlis (2).

In Sabah, state Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said 95 were close contacts and 37 from clusters.

He tweeted that Tawau saw the most infections at 37, followed by Kota Kinabalu (31), Kunak (22), Keningau (17), Kudat (15), Penampang (10), Lahad Datu (9), Kalabakan (8), Semporna (3), Kinabatangan (3), Sandakan, Kota Marudu and Tuaran (2 each) and Papar and Beaufort (1 each).

The nation’s death toll rose to 4,408, but daily fatalities were down to 60 from 72 yesterday.

A total of 880 patients are currently in intensive care units (ICUs) nationwide, with 454 needing ventilator support.

Dr Noor Hisham said the 60 deaths involved 20 in Selangor, 12 in Johor, 11 in Negeri Sembilan, and 4 each in Kuala Lumpur and Labuan.

He said Sabah, Perak and Sarawak recorded 2 each, while Penang, Kedah and Pahang saw 1 fatality each.

Dr Noor Hisham said between June 11 and June 19, the Health Ministry had recorded 22 cases involving variants of concern (VOC) of the Covid-19 virus. 

During that period, the ministry recorded 14 cases of the Beta variant and 8 cases of the Delta variant.

The country has also seen a total of 2,623 clusters, including 19 new clusters today.

1,789 clusters have ended since the pandemic began, while 834 remain active.

Dr Noor Hisham said 11 of today's new clusters are related to workplaces, five came from the community, 2 from high-risk groups, and 1 from a detention center.

Selangor recorded the Industri Lebuh Satu cluster in Klang, Kuala Selangor, and Petaling with 18 cases, the Industri Solok Waja Satu cluster in Klang with 22 cases, the Industri Meranti Dua cluster in Sepang with 39 cases.

Also in Selangor, the Perindustrian Olak Lempit construction site cluster in Kuala Langat recorded 36 cases, and the Persiaran Hamidiah cluster in Hulu Langat with 244 cases. All the new clusters in Selangor are workplace clusters.

Penang logged the Jalan Seri Tg Pinang workplace cluster in the island’s northeast region with 25 cases, Sabah saw the Jalan Bundusan workplace cluster in Kota Kinabalu and Penampang with 9 cases, while Pahang registered the Indera Mahkota 16 workplace cluster in Kuantan with 9 cases, and the Lorong Empat Jerantut cluster in Jerantut with 9 cases.

Kelantan recorded the Kg Kubang Panjang workplace cluster in Pasir Mas and Kota Baru with 36 cases, the Kg Tok Kamis community cluster in Pasir Puteh with 19 cases, and the Kg Pulau Panjang community cluster in Kota Baru with 14 cases, while Negri Sembilan saw the Industri Lukut Tiga workplace cluster in Port Dickson with 35 cases, and the Jalan Kemboja Tujuh high-risk group cluster in Seremban with 27 cases.

Sarawak registered the Lorong Perlis Empat community cluster in Miri and Subis with 33 cases, and the Iris Garden high-risk cluster in Kuching with 23 cases, while Terengganu saw the Beladau Selat community cluster in Kuala Terengganu with 24 cases.

Finally, Sabah recorded the Kg Nelayan Tengah community cluster in Sandakan with 25 cases, while Melaka saw the Tembok Sg Udang 2 detention centre cluster in central Melaka with 81 cases. – The Vibes, June 20, 2021
