SANDAKAN – A prayer ceremony (doa selamat) held by a family in Sandakan resulted in a new Covid-19 cluster in Sabah today, involving 25 Covid-19 positive cases.
The cluster, named the Kg Nelayan Tengah cluster, started from a 45-year-old woman who had attended a doa selamat ceremony in the village on June 13.
She then experienced fever and insomnia and tested positive for the virus at a private clinic here on June 16.
Sabah official Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said in his daily Covid-19 update that 45 close contacts of the woman had been tested, and 24 were positive while 21 more were awaiting results.
Masidi said the Kg Nelayan Tengah cluster is one of two new clusters in Sabah, with the other being the Jalan Bundusan cluster in Penampang involving a factory worker, who lives in Taman Puri Warisan, Kota Kinabalu.
The index case, a 43-year-old male, did not experience any symptoms but tested positive for the virus after a targeted screening in Taman Puri Warisan, which is under the enhanced movement control order.
Following the case, his employer tested other workers at the factory, eight of which were Covid-19 positive.
Sabah recorded 163 fresh infections today, with the highest numbers in Tawau (37), followed by Kota Kinabalu (31) and Kunak (22).
