KUALA LUMPUR – One of the two injured workers in the Damansara-Shah Alam Elevated Highway (DASH) incident died at 7am at Sg Buloh Hospital yesterday.
Petaling Jaya police in a statement said the 53-year-old victim died of internal injuries and suffered injuries to the head and left arm.
The other injured worker, aged 25, is still receiving treatment at the same hospital.
Clean-up operations at the affected construction site have been put on pause after a downpour, which halted works at 3pm yesterday.
DASH developer Prolintas in a statement yesterday warned highway users to be cautious when passing the affected area as works are ongoing to clear the fallen scaffolding.
“The right lane on both sides of the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) will be closed, with a contra lane in place to ease traffic flow.
“Users are advised to abide by the traffic controller and signboards placed at the location.”
Prolintas CEO Datuk Mohammad Azlan Abdullah said the firm has consistently reminded its contractors to comply with standard operating procedures and take necessary measures in line with highway construction safety.
“Our wishes and objectives are clear – to ensure the project is constructed in the safest, (most) punctual (manner) in accordance with the highest standard of engineering practices.
“The construction of DASH involves eight main contractors (and) the full involvement of independent consultant engineers in charge of design, supervision and oversight of the project from various aspects.
“However, the incident that occurred is unfortunate, and we, along with the contractors involved, will provide full cooperation to the authorities and continue to improve on our processes and project execution.”
Work at the affected site has been put on hold following the incident.
“The incident did not involve the public or highway users as it took place in a closed construction site,” said Azlan.
“DASH’s emergency response team was sent to the site to help with traffic control and the removal of the fallen scaffolding.”
According to a Fire and Rescue Department report, the 7pm incident on Saturday occurred near the NKVE Kota Damansara toll plaza.
The workers were performing their tasks underneath the concrete slab when it collapsed.
When rescue personnel arrived at the site, they found concrete rubble and steel structures at the highway construction site. – The Vibes, June 21, 2021
