KUALA LUMPUR – Cleaners and contractors providing cleaning services in schools will receive their salary in full, said the Education Ministry (MoE) in response to the recent frustration from school cleaners that their pay was deducted by 40%.
The ministry in a statement said full payment will be made to school cleaning contractors as stated in their contract.
Government Contract Workers Network coordinator Danial Hakeem welcomed MoE’s decision to withdraw the policy of paying contractors based on employee attendance.
“We hope that the issue of contractors having to cut the salaries of cleaners will not arise again.”
In an online meeting organised by the network on July 2, workers who had their wages cut voiced out their frustration, as many were already barely making ends meet.
“We want to thank those who dared to speak out against MoE’s initial instructions,” said Danial.
“This proves that the power of the people remains the main driver for workers to reclaim their rights.”
The ministry has also granted a 6-month rental fee exemption for businesses operating on school grounds.
“MoE understands the hard times faced by businesses operating in school premises due to the closures.
“A one-year contract extension will also be given automatically to businesses in school premises when the current contract expires.” – The Vibes, July 4, 2021
