KUALA LUMPUR – Covid-19 admissions to the intensive care unit remain high, with bed occupancy surpassing 90%, said Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

In a statement today, the health director-general also said medical frontliners are suffering from burnout.

“The average number of new cases for seven days (June 30 to July 6) is 6,539. It is far above the 4,000 threshold under the National Recovery Plan.”

He said states that recorded fresh infections exceeding the value of 12.2 cases per 100,000 population are Labuan, Negri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Melaka, Putrajaya, Sarawak and Pahang.

Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Labuan showed an average of over 38 cases per 100,000 population, he said, resulting in hospitals exceeding their maximum capacity in the past week.

“Daily cases have increased by an average of 2.6% over the past seven days. If this situation persists, the health system in these states will be paralysed, and a similar situation for the whole country is likely to occur.”

Given this, said Dr Noor Hisham, the ministry has converted several hospitals in the Klang Valley into full Covid-19 facilities, among them Ampang and Sg Buloh Hospitals, as well as the UKM Specialist Children’s Hospital.

He said the bed capacity has been increased at Kuala Lumpur Hospital, Selayang Hospital and Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Klang Hospital for Categories 4 and 5 patients. – Bernama, July 7, 2021
