KUALA LUMPUR – A coalition of non-governmental organisations called Gabungan Bertindak Memorandum Rakyat Malaysia (GBMRM) submitted a memorandum to Istana Negara this morning to call for the resignation of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin by Friday.
The group also urged Malaysians to raise white flags as a sign of solidarity with other citizens following the government’s alleged failure to resolve the Covid-19 crisis.
GBMRM coordinator Mustafa Mansor said calls for Muhyiddin to resign have now involved NGOs, apart from political parties, and that the prime minister had already been given plenty of time and opportunity to resolve the issue.
“It’s reached a point that if he is given more opportunity, it will lead to greater problems,” he told reporters after submitting the memorandum.
“If there is no change until Friday and the prime minister does not want to step down honourably, we urge Malaysians to raise the white flag, wear white clothes and T-shirts as a sign of solidarity with the Malaysian people.”
GBMRM boasts 50 NGOs under its umbrella, including Otai Reformis 98, a group aligned with opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim
Mustafa said the white flag campaign was also to show support for those who have died in the pandemic – whether by the disease or by taking their own lives – as well as the families left behind.
“Will the prime minister step down honourably, or will Malaysians have to raise the white flag, as there is no other option other than the people uniting to ask for a return of their mandate?
“We want Malaysia to be clean and as it was before. May His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the rulers give due consideration to this question.” – The Vibes, July 14, 2021
