TUARAN – A total of 51 new telecommunication towers and 1,874 existing ones in Sabah have been upgraded for 4G capability as of June 30.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Datuk Arthur Kurup said this is part of the RM3.5 billion fund to build 535 new towers and upgrade 3,374 existing towers in Sabah under the Jendela programme.
The programme is set for completion in 2022, he said.
“The completion timeline will depend on various factors like economy, lockdowns, Covid-19 infections and others. But we are hoping to be able to complete it by 2022 as targeted,” he told reporters after launching the telco tower in Kg Rungus Nahaba, near here, today.
Also present was Kiulu assemblyman and Sabah Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.
On the same note, he said some 30,000 premises statewide have been installed with fibre optics, adding that the target is set for 251,000 premises by 2022 as planned under the 12th Malaysia Plan.
The upgrading of internet facilities in Sabah is aimed to allow students to undertake online learning, as well as facilitating e-commerce and online marketing, he said.
