KUALA LUMPUR – Government agencies should not be used as a tool to pressure and blackmail lawmakers into supporting the Perikatan Nasional administration, said Pakatan Harapan.
Among the agencies named in the opposition coalition’s statement today are the Inland Revenue Board, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and police.
“Just as it was done to (DAP secretary-general) Lim Guan Eng and (Muar MP) Syed Saddiq (Syed Abdul Rahman) via MACC and selected prosecution on baseless graft cases, now, the country is witnessing how police investigations are expedited against lawmakers who headed to Parliament on Monday.
We are made to understand that efforts to pressure and blackmail lawmakers are being stepped up. These methods are being used as political lifelines for a prime minister who has lost parliamentary support.”
The statement, issued by the PH presidential council, also highlighted the lack of action by MACC and IRB against those who “crossed over” to support Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
“Therefore, we emphasise that enforcement agencies must be professional and neutral, and not follow the political flavour of the current government.
“Don’t get carried away when the captain is adrift.”
Lim and Syed Saddiq are currently battling corruption charges in court.
The PH statement comes as Umno publicly withdraws support for the PN government and Muhyiddin.
The prime minister has said he will table a confidence motion when the Dewan Rakyat convenes next month. – The Vibes, August 6, 2021
