KUALA LUMPUR – Rejecting the potential declaration of a state of emergency, Muda said such a move will “paralyse” an economy already reeling from the blow dealt by Covid-19.
“The country’s economy will be paralysed, and the rice bowl of citizens, affected. SME operators, petty traders and companies will experience repercussions in their attempts to recover their operations,” said a statement by the party formed by former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
“Foreign investment won’t flow in because the country is no longer democratic, with many workers ending up unemployed.”
Muda highlighted the “double standards” when it comes to penalties against those who breach coronavirus rules, with ordinary folk given hefty fines and jail sentences, while cabinet members get just a slap on the wrist.
With this already happening, the party expressed concern about the “absolute powers” that will be in the prime minister’s hands should an emergency be imposed.
“A state of emergency will give absolute powers to the prime minister. The constitution can be amended and laws changed without parliamentary approval.
“The federal government can also interfere in state matters, resulting in a lack of checks and balances in the country.”
It urged the Conference of Rulers not to approve any request for an emergency declaration, especially if it is aimed at suspending Parliament. – The Vibes, October 24, 2020
