KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s appeal to opposition MPs for bipartisan support is a step forward for Malaysia’s democracy.

Pasir Puteh MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh said the prime minister’s announcement yesterday is a display of the Pagoh MP’s openness and commitment to democracy.

“It further shows we are respectful towards the opposition,” Nik Zawawi told The Vibes.

The PAS lawmaker suggested that this offer must be accepted by all sides, adding that those who refuse are focused on self-interest, close-minded, and stuck in their old ways.

When asked about his views about the possibility of DAP entering the government should they accept Muhyiddin’s offer, Nik Zawawi said: “No problem, when we do bipartisan, there’s no problem. We are open to everyone. Those who want to join can join, but DAP has been rejected.”

Today, PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man told Malaysiakini that the party will not accept DAP into the government.

Muhyiddin, in his televised address, even promised parliamentary, democratic and constitutional reforms in return for a vote of confidence.

However, all major opposition parties have firmly rejected his offer. – The Vibes, August 14, 2021
