Agong calls on govt, civil society to aid Kedah flood victims

KUALA LUMPUR – Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today expressed his sadness over the disaster at Gunung Jerai in Yan, Kedah, that has claimed four lives.

Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin in a statement said His Majesty conveyed his condolences to victims’ families.

“His Majesty also hopes and prays that the others still missing will be rescued soon.”

The king expressed his appreciation to all government agencies and departments involved in the search-and-rescue operations.

Residents in the areas hit by mudslides and flooding are urged to remain vigilant, and immediately move to relief centres if instructed to do so by the authorities.

Fadil said the Agong calls on the government and civil society groups to lend a helping hand to those affected.

The incident, which struck on Wednesday evening, saw many homes in Perigi, Teroi Bukit, Singkir, Kg Permatang Keramat, Kg Lubuk Boi, Pekan Yan Besar, Titi Teras, Kg Acheh and Kg Setoi in Yan inundated.

Two relief centres have been opened in the district, at SMKA Yan and SK Teroi.

Yesterday, Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor declared Yan and Kuala Muda as Level 1 disaster areas based on the National Security Council’s Directive No. 20. – Bernama, August 20, 2021
