KUALA LUMPUR – Raja Noor Jan Shah, a man famously known for his claims that he is the Melaka ‘sultan’, passed away today due to Covid-19.
Pertubuhan Martabat Jalinan Muhibbah (MJMM) president Abdul Rani Kulup Abdullah, posted his condolence message on Facebook, stating that Raja Noor Jan Shah breathed his last at Hospital Selayang.
He was 64 years old.
“It is with great sadness for me to announce that Tuanku Raja Noor Jan Shah has returned to his Maker just now at the Selayang Hospital.
“Condolences to Mak Engku Tuanku Zaidatul Mardiah Yussuf and family.
“May his soul be blessed,” said Rani.
Born in 1957, Raja Noor courted controversy throughout his life with his claim to the Melaka throne.
Historically, the state’s monarchy and its empire had effectively ended in the 16th century with the passing of Sultan Mahmud Shah after the city was conquered by the Portuguese.
In 2005, Raja Noor Jan Shah made news after he set up a palace at Bukit Punggor, Melaka, and even held an investiture ceremony.
Previous news reports also claimed that the claimant owned a Rolls Royce with yellow number plates displaying the words ‘Sultan Diraja Melaka’, similar to official cars owned by other state monarchs.
In 2019, he faced charges at the sessions court under Section 419 of the Penal Code for cheating by impersonation.
He was accused of committing the offence at an event at the A’Famosa Resort in Alor Gajah in December 2013.
Raja Noor beat the charges, however, as prosecutors failed to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. – The Vibes, August 21, 2021
