GEORGE TOWN – The proposal to build a new state assembly building was backed by newly appointed Penang governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak in his address today.

He said the proposal, which had been raised in the assembly in 2015 and 2019, should be implemented as a new milestone for the state.

“This is for the convenience of the assembly and to accommodate the number of elected representatives, as well as to improve other facilities needed.

“I hope the chief minister, exco members and senior government officials take appropriate follow-up action to realise our common aspirations.”

The state assembly building in Lebuh Light here was built in the 1820s in the Anglo-Indian classical style as a recorder’s court and later a Magistrate’s Court – all under the police court purview.

The building had been renovated in 1874 and the current immigration building was added in 1890.

The last renovation was in 2019 and was only completed last November, costing a total of RM3.67 million.

Meanwhile, Fuzi hoped that Penang can move to Phase 3 of the National Recovery Plan in the near future where more economic and social sectors can operate.

At the same time, he reminded that the standard operating procedure compliance should be adhered to as part of life in the new norm.

“I also call on all the people of Penang, regardless of religion, race and culture to live together in peace and harmony.

“It is important for us to appreciate the spirit of nationhood that helped us achieve independence for the common good and the future of the country,” he said ahead of tomorrow’s Merdeka Day. – The Vibes, August 30, 2021
