KUALA LUMPUR – Two crew members have been confirmed dead while 185 have been rescued after the Dayang Topaz maintenance vessel collided with an oil platform off Kuala Baram in Miri, Sarawak.

The vessel’s anchor cable snapped, setting it adrift due to strong currents. It then collided with the Baram B oil platform.

In the 6.45am incident, 125 crew members jumped into the sea, said the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in a statement today.

“The 185 crew members have been rescued while two are confirmed dead.”

Earlier, 62 other crew members are still onboard the vessel.

“The Maritime Rescue Command Centre is working with the Fire and Rescue Department, the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Brunei’s National Search Coordination Centre, Petronas and Shell to locate the rest of the crew members,” said MMEA.

“The Penggalang 23 vessel and two patrol crafts – KM Siagut and KM Siakap – are helping to bring medical help to the victims.” – The Vibes, October 27, 2020
