A TOTAL 4,014 cases of domestic violence were recorded nationwide as of June this year - an increase compared to 3,768 cases recorded throughout 2025.
Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said the highest number of cases were due to misunderstandings, emphasising that communication is an important element in preventing conflicts from becoming more serious and leading to acts of domestic violence.
She added that from the record, 75 per cent (3,015) involved female victims.
“UN Women statistics show that almost one in three women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence by a partner at least once in their lives.
“At the national level, data from the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has recorded 4,014 cases of domestic violence as of June this year nationwide compared to 3,768 cases in 2025,” she said today.
Among other reasons that also contribute to domestic violence cases is the financial factor known as financial abuse.
“There are also couples who have more than enough income, but still do not help in the household. Sometimes women as partners cannot stand that situation.
“She will speak up, and when she does, it triggers an argument. Some women choose to remain silent and say, ‘I don’t care if you don’t give me money, I have my own money.’ There are women like that,” she said.
Johor recorded the highest number of domestic violence cases with 721, followed by Selangor with 614 cases and Perak with 405 cases.
“This statistic can be interpreted as a positive sign that more and more victims are now daring to come forward. And they are making reports and seeking help regarding the violence they have experienced.
“Secondly, this also reflects the increasing level of community awareness on the issue of domestic violence. However, the issue of domestic violence cannot be taken lightly and normalised,” she said.
She said efforts to address violence in households need to be continued and strengthened through community awareness, support systems and interventions at the community level. – August 20, 2026
