KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to remain in power after Umno yesterday reiterated its commitment to the prime minister’s Perikatan Nasional coalition, said an opposition politician, but hinted that things may not be “business as usual”.
PKR’s Wong Chen said after Muhyiddin received the royal snub to declare a state of emergency, there was an opportunity for “political reconfiguration” against him, but Umno’s reassurance may have stymied such possibilities.
“The prime minister, who had attempted an emergency over the weekend (if it had succeeded, it would have been detrimental to all political parties, including Umno), miraculously got the Umno mandate to continue to rule. Umno now says that it just wants more respect and consensus,” said the Subang MP in a Facebook post today.
“With Umno numbers seemingly back with Muhyiddin, I don't think Muhyiddin will be resigning, sacking any ministers (unless demanded by Umno) or calling the opposition any time soon to discuss the Budget, negotiate any reforms or get equal parliamentary resources for the opposition.”
But he hinted that things may not be entirely status quo for the country’s political landscape.
“So it’s probably back to business as usual. Or not?”
Umno Supreme Council members last night reaffirmed their support for Muhyiddin and PN after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong declined his request to put the country under draconian rule. – The Vibes, October 27, 2020
