MIRI – Those infected by the Delta variant can worsen to Category 5 and die, said Sarawak's Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing today.

This was apparent in cases in Bintulu,  northern Sarawak where the condition of people infected with the Delta variant quickly deteriorated from Category 1 (no symptoms) and Category 2 (mild symptoms) to Category 5 (intubation required) and death.

Tiong told his constituents on social media not to take Categories 1 and 2 infections lightly.

“There are already cases of those already fully vaccinated who were still infected. And when they were infected, they were only in Category 1 or 2.

“Their health quickly deteriorated to Category 5 because they did not seek treatment fast enough.

“They died after being in Category 5,” he said.

The Bintulu MP also told his constituents not to underestimate the dangers of Covid-19, especially the mutated strains like Delta.

He said data showed that even those who are fully vaccinated suffer severe complications when infected.

“The Covid-19 situation in Sarawak now has gotten worse than before,” Tiong said.

Noting that netizens had said that state authorities should ease standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the fully vaccinated, he said it would be unwise.

“Even after being fully vaccinated, we must adhere strictly to all SOPs as we did before,” he said.

Bintulu, like the rest of Sarawak, is seeing sharp hikes in Covid-19 infections daily.

The State Disaster Management Committee yesterday announced that the Delta variant has already been detected in all the 12 divisions in Sarawak.

Daily case numbers have been more than 3,000 for the past nine days, and the state’s death toll hit 630 yesterday evening. – The Vibes, September 14, 2021
