BUTTERWORTH – A 33-year-old man from Bukit Mertajam has pleaded not guilty to six counts of impersonating a civil servant and a slew of robberies.
Mohamad Azrullah Rodzi was brought to the magistrate’s court here today. He allegedly impersonated a policeman before stealing a patrol car from the Seberang Prai police headquarters at 9.15pm last Saturday.
Magistrate M. Kalaisrasi has imposed RM17,500 bail with one surety and fixed November 27 for case mention.
Deputy public prosecutor Aisyah Al Humairah Kamarulzaman earlier asked for the court to impose a RM10,000 bail for each of the six charges.
However, defense counsel Muhaimin Hashim pleaded for lesser bail as the accused is married with a young son and has no permanent job.
He also urged the court to refer the accused to undergo a mental evaluation.
Azrullah was also charged with impersonating a policeman and an attempted robbery at a mobile phone shop.
He was slapped with another count of attempted robbery of a mobile phone shop dealer at 10pm on the same day.
He also allegedly robbed a 21-year-old woman on the same day.
If convicted the accused will face up to seven years’ jail and a fine under the robbery charges.
Kepala Batas district police chief Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the teenage girl whom the accused brought along for the joyride has been released.
Noorzainy said she was a victim and not his girlfriend as reported by the media earlier.
He also said the other accused is Azrullah’s 32-year-old brother who will appear as a prosecution witness. – The Vibes, October 28, 2020
