MIRI – The United States has given its assurance of cooperation with the Sarawak government to tackle the state’s raging Covid-19 situation, as well as on other pressing concerns related to the preservation of nature and regional security.
US Ambassador to Malaysia Brian McFeeters told reporters in an online press conference today that Washington is looking to help find effective solutions to these issues.
He said he has concluded virtual meetings with state leaders, local politicians, business groups, social organisations, researchers and educationists.
“I had fruitful meetings with them during this virtual tour of Sarawak,” he said, stressing that the most important matter at hand is Covid-19.
“The situation in Sarawak is of concern to us in the US government, too, and I spoke with Sarawak leaders about how we can cooperate more to deal with what we are facing now.
“The US government is going to give another billion vaccine doses to the world. I am sure Sarawak will be getting the attention it needs.”
He said there is currently no specific remedy for Sarawak’s Delta variant woes, but medical and health researchers from both the US and the Borneo state are cooperating closely in terms of sharing expertise and experience.
To a question on regional security, McFeeters said the US wants to see security and stability in this part of the world, in the interest of all countries.
“We have and we are working closely to see stability in the South China Sea, as we believe that Sarawak and Malaysia have the right to develop their offshore resources.
“We do not want to see interference that could affect regional peace.”
Another matter of urgent concern is climate change and forest preservation in the state, he said.
“Sarawak is a key area in these aspects.
“I have urged state leaders to look into the preservation of forests, and the US government wants to work more with Sarawak in terms of renewable energy projects.”
On education, he said ongoing research collaborations will be enhanced.
A teenage girl from Miri has been chosen to take part in a US space programme soon, he said.
McFeeters added that the US is also seeking more linkages with local community bodies and social groups to help enhance social and economic development, so as to improve living standards. – The Vibes, October 1, 2021
