Health worker fired after injecting teen with empty shot

KUALA LUMPUR – The nurse who injected a 12-year-old teenager with an empty syringe has been sacked from her duties at the vaccination centre in Universiti Malaya. 

Deputy Health Minister I Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali said the government takes the matter seriously and had been informed of the termination by the healthcare organisation under ProtectHealth Corporation Sdn Bhd.

“The government looks at these sorts of incidents seriously and will take the appropriate action to ensure that the vaccination process is safe.

“The safety and wellbeing of the vaccine recipients is our priority and all healthcare personnel will be continuously monitored to ensure that they comply with our standard operating procedures,” said Dr Noor Azmi.

He also announced in a press statement today that beginning October 3, only one parent or guardian will be able to accompany teenagers to the following stations at vaccination centres:

Station 1: temperature and symptoms check 

Station 2: vaccination registration 

Station 3: parent/guardian permission and consultation 

Station 4: vaccine injection 

After the vaccine has been injected, the parent or guardian will have to wait outside while the child is monitored for 15 to 30 minutes before being returned to their care. 

Dr Noor Azmi, who also heads the Covid-19 Immunisation Taskforce – Adolescent (CITF-A), reiterated that recording the vaccination process is allowed. 

“As according to prior SOPs, the health worker has to show the receiver the syringe filled with the vaccine,” he said, reminding health workers and volunteers to perform their tasks carefully and responsibly.
