IPOH – The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) is demanding a thorough investigation into an accident that saw a foreign worker at a Top Glove Sdn Bhd production line losing his hand while on the job.
Penang MTUC secretary K. Veeriah said the congress is aghast that such an incident occurred when safety standards should be increased in view of the high demand for rubber gloves amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The accident occurred at the Tasek industrial zone here yesterday, he said.
He said the worker’s hand was caught in the rotating shafts of a glove-washing brush tank, resulting in it being severed at the wrist.
Veeriah called on the Safety And Health Department (DOSH) to conduct a probe.
“What we need to know is whether the company abdicated its fiduciary duty of care.”
Top Glove has been accused by US authorities of forced labour practices, and has since taken steps to address the claim.
The company did not immediately respond to calls made to its factory here and its corporate headquarters in Shah Alam.
