KUALA LUMPUR – Two contractors involved in the Sg Besi-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) project have been fined a total of RM300,000 for failing to ensure site safety, following a fatal incident on March 22.
Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia in a statement said main contractor for Package CA3 (CH4200-CH7800 alignment) Muhibah Perniagaan dan Pembinaan Sdn Bhd was fined RM100,000, while subcontractor China Communications Construction Company (M) Sdn Bhd was slapped with a RM200,000 penalty.
Both were found to have violated Section 34B(1)(b) of the CIDB Act.
On March 22, three people died and another three were injured when part of a tower crane collapsed at the highway construction site near Puncak Banyan, Persiaran Alam Damai in Cheras.
Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department director Nordin Pauzi had said three of the victims were construction workers.
The department’s operations room in a statement said it received a distress call at 8.45am.
“The team deployed to the scene found that the crane had fallen on a Perodua Bezza. The driver, a local man, was seriously hurt.
“Of the three construction workers, it is believed that two of them died after falling from a height of almost 37m.”
The third body was recovered two days later.
Nordin had said the remains of the third victim, identified as Chinese national Mu Tong Zheng, could not be recovered quickly as firefighters faced difficulties due to the unstable construction structure, and the body was stuck between the construction beam and gantry crane. – The Vibes, October 11, 2021
