KUALA LUMPUR – A local motorcyclist who rode against the flow of traffic on the Sg Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE), leading to the death of another motorcyclist, has surrendered himself to police.

According to Ampang Jaya district police chief Mohd Azam Ismail, the 41-year-old man is a food trader who resides in Kajang.

The other motorcyclist, Ahmad Fadzil Omar Azzadin, 62, had been thrown off his motorcycle and landed some 30m below the expressway. He died instantly.

“Investigations found that the suspect was travelling from Ampang to Kajang when he got lost and decided to enter the SUKE flyover by going against traffic flow, causing the accident,” Azam said in a statement today, as quoted by Astro Awani.

“Because of his encounter with the victim’s motorcycle, the suspect fell off his motorcycle. After the accident, the suspect returned home.

“The suspect only knew about the accident after watching the news on TV and seeing the uproar on social media,” he added, noting that the man has also lodged a police report on the accident.

Medical checks on the man revealed that he has broken bones on his right shoulder and pinkie while he also has wounds on his left shoulder and right leg as a result of the accident.

While police have confiscated the Yamaha motorbike ridden by the suspect during the accident, no arrests were made as the suspect was seriously injured and had difficulty moving.

Noting that further procedures will be carried out once the suspect’s condition has stabilised, Azam said that six witness statements, including one from the suspect himself, have been recorded thus far on the incident.

The two motorcycles involved will be sent to Puspakom and the Chemistry Department for further examination, he added.

In the incident at about 1.10pm on June 14, Fadzil was riding a Ducati Panigale motorcycle when he saw the suspect suddenly emerge against the flow of traffic on the right shoulder of the road.

He tried to avoid the oncoming motorcycle, veering, hitting the left railing of the expressway’s ramp, and falling off.

Family take suspect to task for fleeing scene

Meanwhile, Fadzil’s son has since reportedly called on the suspect to issue an apology to the victim’s family.

The son, in his 30s, was quoted by FMT as saying that the rider should explain why he had fled the scene of the accident without bothering to call an ambulance for the victim, who was an elderly man.

“Everyone makes mistakes, but at least be responsible and apologise to us, especially to my mother,” he was quoted as saying.

“If the rider is reading this, please come forward and apologise to my mother.”

He was thrown 30m onto the ground below and pronounced dead on the spot.

Following the incident, SUKE concessionaires Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) said that they would implement additional safety measures on the elevated highway.

However, Prolintas chief executive officer Datuk Mohammad Azlan Abdullah also stressed that the elevated highway had been constructed according to all specifications. – The Vibes, June 17, 2023
